It will provide individuals and professionals with the how-to and essential knowledge to kick start your own cannabis Tissue Culture (TC) laboratory along with a certificate delivered by College La Cité.

Who can join

Adults over 21 years old.

This workshop is designed for established professionals in the cannabis industry considering opening a TC lab, student willing to specialise in cannabis TC and individuals willing to take their next career move in the industry.
Instructors

  • Alexandre Tromas, Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Research Associate at the TAC-B of College La Cité with 20 years of experience in TC of various plants (Mimosa pudica, Arabidopsis thaliana, Lotus japonicus...) and specialised in cannabis TC for the past 3 years proven by more than 20 applied research collaborations with Canadian companies in this field.
  • Vinay Singh, PhD, MBA, CEO of Apollo Green Inc. combines more than 20 years of expertise in plant biotechnology and TC. His company uses TC daily for routine operations such as micro-propagation, storage of elite cultivars and clean-up of cannabis mother plants.
  • Kadija Houssein Youssouf, B. Sc. in Biotechnology, Research Assistant at the TAC-B of College La Cité will also provide the participants with her insights and experience in the laboratory along with tips and tricks to start your TC journey.

Objectives

The participants will know when and how to use cannabis TC for different applications in order to gain time and space for daily operations resulting in costs reduction and increased productivity.

Contents

  • The participants will be given a "starter kit" for purchasing basic equipment and consumables to open a new TC lab.
  • The participants will get a detailed SOPs for basic Cannabis TC applications, including growth conditions, media compositions for propagation, storage, pathogen removal...
  • The participants will be familiarized with the theory of cannabis TC:
    • Introduction to TC, definition, requirements, advantages, limitations…
    • Presentation of the different types of TC vessels and media composition.
    • How meristem microdissection can help eliminate pathogens.
    • Long-term storage solutions for precious genetics with their associated pros and cons.
    • Conclusion, case study, troubleshooting and Q&A.
  • The participants will assist to online interactive training sessions including:
    • Preparation of TC culture media
    • Preparation and organisation of the material inside the Biological Safety Cabinet (hood).
    • Surface sterilization of explants.
    • How to prepare nodal segment and do meristem microdissection.
    • How to transfer TC plants to fresh media and see how to do micropropagation.
